After reviewing Stevenage’s Local Plan during the Hold Direction, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) asked Stevenage Borough Council (SBC) to prepare an Area Action Plan (AAP) for Stevenage Station Gateway Area to support Policy TC4: Station Gateway Major Opportunity Area. This is a limited area within the wider Stevenage Central area. The objectives and design principles pursue sustainability with a view for a zero carbon development.

Description

The Development Plan Decrement for the Station Gateway Area, is a plan providing the strategic long-term planning for the area around the Stevenage Railway Station to enhance the environment, maximise density of space and unlock economic opportunities.

The objectives and key design principles align with the Local Plan and national policy direction, including:

  • Creating a new gateway and arrive experience, i.e. improving step-free and disabled access
  • Creating an exemplar, low carbon urban village
  • Sustainable travel considered throughout to ensure good access for all travel modes, including cycling.
  • Green infrastructure in public realm
  • Climate change consideration in all development decisions
  • Design the highest architectural standard and future-proofing area to enable further development
