Climate change risks and opportunities has been considered as one of the key considerations for the pre-application and planning applications for all development projects.

Description

Leading by example to deliver climate resilience and sustainability in development project, climate change risks and opportunities has been considered as one of the key considerations for the pre-application and planning applications of the SG1 Regeneration Programme.

The design of the proposed development is in accordance with the sustainability objectives of relevant policies at national, regional and local levels. The masterplan’s sustainable features are categorised into 8 categories - energy and CO2 emissions, transport, water, materials and supply chain, waste, ecology, pollution and wellbeing. The sustainable measures that will be considered from the project’s onset include:

  • Selecting materials that respond and adapt to the changing climate to mitigate the impact of varying weather conditions arising from climate change over the lifespan of the building
  • Implementing sustainable drainage measures where possible to reduce runoff and the overall surface water flood risk
  • Providing energy efficient services and allowing for on-site renewables when suitable
  • Adopting electrically fuelled (over gas) development with the grid in the process of decarbonising
  • Further improving access to public transport and sustainable transport networks, including cycling and walking
  • Employing low environmental impact materials, i.e. low embodied carbon, responsible sourcing credentials and VOC content, reuse demolition material
  • Considering reusing/upcycling or recycling materials after demolition to reduce waste and environmental impacts
  • Developing new green spaces, replacing and planting additional trees and implementing various enhancement measures to enhance ecological health and biodiversity
  • Following regulations on noise, air pollution and waste to safeguard occupants' wellbeing during construction
  • Linking the provision of homes and jobs and connecting different areas with cycleways and public transport
