Supporting the development of cycling infrastructure across Stevenage will help reduce transport-related emissions, improve air quality, and make active travel a safe, convenient and attractive option for everyday journeys.
Building on Stevenage’s extensive cycleway network, the Council is working with partners (including Hertfordshire County Council) to improve connectivity, address gaps and barriers, and upgrade key routes and facilities so that more residents and staff can choose cycling for commuting and local trips.
To support cycling, the Council has delivered new lockable cycle hangars (including installations at Daneshill House and South Gate) and promoted the process for residents to apply for spaces and suggest new sites.
The Council has also installed maintenance stands around Stevenage so cyclists can access basic tools for minor repairs while out and about.
A cycle map is also shared by the Council and can be accessed here Stevenage Cycle Map to support route planning and help users identify cycle routes and parking.
Additionally. the Council has progressed work to improve key walking and cycling links, including underpass upgrades, supported by wider infrastructure programmes, while continuing mechanical sweeping of cycleways and signposting fault reporting routes where responsibilities sit with the highway authority.
Delivered and progressed a programme of underpass upgrades to improve key walking and cycling links, including safety and public realm enhancements to make routes more attractive and usable year-round.
Six maintenance stands have been installed in the town, providing cyclists with tools for on-the-go bike repairs.
The Council has installed five cycle hangars across the town to provide a bike storage alternative for residents living in flats or small houses with limited or no space to store their bikes. Recently, the Council completed the installation of one hangar in the Daneshill House courtyard, and another at South Gate in the Town Centre. More installations are planned.
